The Amateurian Literary Society was founded May 7, 1890. Members were from the Preparatory School. They held regular meetings on Friday evenings in the Amateurian Hall.

"This society, considering its size, did as good work last year as either society in the college, and was the means of furnishing help to many preparatory students in the literary line that they would not have received other-wise. It is the aim of its members to do such literary work as will fit them for the college society, and we think all preparatory students should avail themselves of this opportunity to do literary work. J. L. Settles, its president, is working hard to make the society a benefit to all its members, and would be pleased to see the society grow from its present membership of thirty to a hundred." The Argus 1895-10-04, pg. 7

Preamble: "We the students of the Preparatory Department of the Illinois Wesleyan University, in order to develop our intellectual ability and promote the educational, moral and social welfare of its members, agree to form a society, and for its government do hereby adopt the following Constitution and By-Laws."
