Biographical / Historical

Dr. Robert Bray is an Emeritus R. Forrest Colwell Professor of American Literature at Illinois Wesleyan University and earned his undergraduate degree from Pittsburgh (Kansas) State University in 1966; and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1967 and 1971, respectively. He joined the faculty at IWU in 1970 and retired in 2014. Bray is an historian and playwright with publications on 19th century American literature, Caribbean literature and Abraham Lincoln. In addition to serving as editor-in-chief and co-contributor to A Reader’s Guide to Illinois Literature (1985), he was also appointed to the READ Illinois Advisory Committee under Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian, Jim Edgar. In 1990 Bray was selected to serve on a committee of four individuals for the Illinois State Library Heritage Project to identify Illinois’ most notable authors whose names would grace the new library’s frieze. Other notable honors include membership to Society of Midland Authors (1986); Illinois Wesleyan University Award for Teaching Excellence (Sears Foundation Award, 1991); and, Saddlebag Selection for best book on American Methodism (2006).
