Scope and Contents
The Maude Essig Collection primarily consists of biographical materials and Maude's personal memoirs from her service in WW1. Additionally, 2 folders of Maude’s correspondence can be found in record group 7-5/2/14; and, photographs of Maude can be found in 18-1/4. Personal materials such as her nursing uniform can also be found in Special Collections.

Biographical / Historical
Maude Frances Essig was born November 29, 1884 on a farm near Elkhart, IN. She received her nursing education from Passavant Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, IL, graduating in 1907. She worked for the Chicago Visiting Nurse Association as a school nurse, infant welfare, nurse, tuberculosis nurse, and industrial nurse, before accepting a position at Elkhart General Hospital.
Maude joined the U.S. Army Base Hospital 32 on September 7, 1917, and served in Contrexeville, France, from December 265, 1918 to February 20, 1919. From 1920-1922, Maude resumed her duties as Director of Nursing at the Elkhart General Hospital, and served for a brief period as an instructor of the training school of the Women's Christian Hospital in Jamestown, NY. From 1924-1940, she served as an administrator and Director of the Brokaw Hospital School of Nursing in Normal, IL. She lived at the Veterans Administration Center in Dayton, OH, a retirement home for persons with military service, from 1952 until her passing on September 6, 1981.
