Robert Long Mowery was born March 22, 1934, in Rochester Pennsylvania. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1956, Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, in 1960, and a Master of Arts in Religion from Northwestern University in 1961. Mowery also received his Doctor of Philosophy in New Testament from Northwestern University in 1967, and a Master of Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1968.

Dr. Mowery was ordained to ministry in the United Methodist Church as a deacon in 1957, and elder in 1960. He served as Pastor for the Methodist Church in Odell, IL, from 1963-1966 and in Pesotum, IL, from 1966-1968. He accepted the position as Illinois Wesleyan's Humanities Librarian in 1968, and served in that role until 1994, when he became the University's Archivist and Special Collections Librarian, a role he would fill until 1988. Mowery began serving as a Trustee for the Illinois State University Wesley Foundation in 1987, and was a member of many professional organizations including the American Association of University Professors, American Library Association, Society of Biblical Literature, and Illinois Library Association, and served as Vice-President of Corn Belt Library for time.

Dr. Mowery taught many courses at Illinois Wesleyan University including Elementary and Intermediate Greek, History of the Ancient World, and the Gateway Colloquium, Biblical Families: Dysfunctional and Otherwise, before retiring in 1998.
