Biographical / Historical

C.B. (Cyril Bozarth) Frevert was born to Cyril and Allie (Bozarth) Frevert Oct. 22, 1938 in Normal, IL. C.B. graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1961 with a degree in Music Education. During his time at IWU he was involved in the fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota. C.B. Frevert lived on his family farm in rural Stanford, Illinois, for much of his life. He later moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, and wintered in Florida. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Illinois Wesleyan, he went on to earn a master’s degree from Northwestern University. He taught in Earlville, Illinois, and played the organ for many years at churches in the Bloomington-Normal area. After his passing on December 16, 2017, it was his wish that the family farm land be sold and the money from that sale be donated to IWU and two other local nonprofits in the Bloomington/Normal community. From the 930 acres of high-quality McLean County farmland that was sold, the University received more than $3.5 million from the C.B. Frevert Family Trust. A portion of the designated gift from his estate provided for the purchase of 35 new Steinway & Sons pianos, an endowment for ongoing maintenance and repair of all pianos for the School of Music with the remaining one-third of the bequest funding endowed scholarships for School of Music students.

“C.B. was a 1961 alum who cared deeply about Illinois Wesleyan, and specifically, his experience as a music education major with the School of Music. His incredible gift of more than $3.5 million will support student scholarships and equipment in the School of Music,” said Illinois Wesleyan President Eric Jensen. “The Frevert family diligently worked their world-class farmland for generations, and we are honored to be among the beneficiaries of C.B.’s legacy, which will live on at Illinois Wesleyan for generations to come.” (11-20-18, Matt Wing & John Twork)
