Biographical / Historical
Zeta Epsilon was recognized as a local fraternity in 1969 by the President's Cabinet. Approval was granted with the following stipulations: 1) the university would provide neither financial assistance nor housing now or in the future, 2) Zeta Epsilon could not seek national affiliation before June, 1971, and 3) any decision regarding Zeta Epsilon participation in formal rush would be left up to Inter-Fraternity Council. In April 1970 the fraternity was accorded full voting membership on the Interfraternity Council. At that time they were seeking a national affiliation and filed an application with the Death of Students Office. They were primarily interested in Delta Kappa Epsilon, Delta Tau Delta and Sigma Pi. They were housed at Adams Hall. The Sigma Pi, Epsilon Gamma Chapter was officially recognized on Illinois Wesleyan's campus in 1972 as Sigma Pi Order of Zeta Epsilon. In 1975, Zeta Epsilon officially became the Epsilon Gamma chapter of Sigma Pi and was presented with a charter. This chapter of Sigma Pi was founded on four values: scholarship, leadership, brotherhood, and service to the community. Their international philanthropy is the International Red Cross.
"For many years the men of Sigma Pi and the ideals which they clung to were considered outcasts to the system. The reason for this was the very basis on which these ideals were formed. These men had outlawed both physical and mental hazing of their pledges. This was a central point of criticism. The Sigma Pi pledge program was different from any seen on campus before. For a start, the word and the idea behind the word pledge was eliminated from use. A Junior Member program was instituted instead. With this new term came a whole new philosophy. The Junior Members are treated as virtual equals to the Actives. We feel this program best fits the needs of the young college man today. Today, Sigma Pi is one of the strongest and most well respected fraternities on Wesleyan's campus with a membership of 52 strong. It has come forward as a leader in the campus community as a whole, as well as in the Greek community as a whole. The philosophies which seemed so strange when first instituted now are gaining general acceptance. We are young, and growing and will continue to strive to improve." -The Argus 4/13/1979
In 2012, the AUJC has found the Sigma Pi Fraternity responsible for serious violations of Student Code of Conduct policies at an unregistered, off-campus event with respect to the use of alcohol and marijuana and the lack of attention to adequate safeguards for ensuring the health and well-being of those in attendance. The following sanctions have been imposed:
The Sigma Pi Fraternity will be suspended as a registered student organization for three years with eligibility to return in the fall of 2015.
During the term of suspension, no organized activity may occur, including meetings, socials, recruitment, or other gatherings of the chapter.
The fraternity may request reinstatement in 2015 and, if approved, will remain on probation for an additional four years.
The tentative date for re-colonization—when Sigma Pi is recognized as a new Greek organization (‘colony’) but not yet a chapter—is Feb. 21 [2016]. It will then take twelve to eighteen months
for the organization to become an official chapter. During this time, Reeves will visit once a month to assess the progress of the organization until it becomes a chapter, after which a regional director will
oversee the organization.
As of 2024, there is no chapter of Sigma Pi at IWU.
